Youth Ambassadors of Climate Justice:

Felix Finkbeiner:

Believe.Earth: Planting Trees & Ideas was founded by Felix Finkbeiner. However his climate movement began at 9 years old in 2007 when Felix founded Plant-for-the-Planet. He mobilized children to start planting trees around the world. In 2011 Felix led a march with classmates to addressed the United Nations: “Stop Talking, Start Planting”. Today Felix’s project has planted more than 15 billion trees around the world. Follow this empowered youth program originally inspired by Felix’s homework on Wangari Maathai, founder of The Green Belt Movement. She was the first African to win a Nobel Peace Prize and it was the first given for the environmental. In 2008, the organization began holding Plant-for-the-Planet Academies, which have now reached more than 67,000 children from 66 different countries.

Greta Thunberg:

We can’t save the world by playing by the rules because the rules have to be changed. Everything things to change. And it has to start today. G.T.

Youth climate change protests kick off across the world. Students from 112 countries skipped school in mid-March to join climate activist Greta Thunberg’s School Strike for Climate demanding government action on climate change. The global event was part of the Fridays for Future movement ignited by Thunberg in August 2018 when she protested in front of Sweden’s parliament for three weeks. Thunberg was recently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by members of Norway’s parliament for her work spearheading youth climate action. “Greta Thunberg has launched a mass movement which I see as a major contribution to peace,” said MP Freddy André Øvstegård, one of the nominators. Thunberg was also recently nominated for France’s Prix Liberte (Freedom Prize) and was awarded Germany’s Golden Camera award. Watch Greta Thunberg’s TED Talk, 2018.

Dr. Sylvia Earle is the world’s leading oceanographer, marine biologist, explorer, conservationist, aquanaut, author and lecturer. She is the founder of Sylvia Earle Alliance (S.E.A.)/Mission Blue and Deep Ocean Exploration and Research, Inc. protecting and restoring our Ocean. Sylvia is the creator of Ocean Elders (see below) and Hope Spots igniting public support for global network of marine protected areas. Dr. Earle was named Geographic Explorer in Residence since 1998, first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/NOAA, first Hero for the Planet by Time Magazine, represented the Ocean during the Climate Talks at COP21 December 4, 2015 in Paris, Chair of the Advisory Council of the Harte Research Institute, inspiration for the ocean in Google Earth, leader of the NGS Sustainable Seas Expeditions, and the subject of the 2014 Netflix film, Mission Blue. Follow @mission_blue.

Sylvia Earle’s message for 50th Years of Earth Day Apr 22, 2020. We have the Power of Knowing. No more excuses.

Ocean Elders: Created by Dr. Sylvia Earle, Ocean Elders serves as a catalyst for the protection of the ocean and its wildlife. At the core of our efforts is the active championing for the creation or expansion of marine protected areas that are critical to both the protection and the recovery of marine ecosystems from human impacts. The health of the ocean is directly linked and positively correlated to human health, security, and prosperity.

Ocean Elders is an independent group of global leaders who have joined together to serve as a catalyst in the conservation and protection of the ocean and its wildlife. These individuals use their collective influence, supported by science and data, to promote ocean conservation, pursue the protection of the ocean’s habitat and wildlife, and preserve its ecosystems and species biodiversity.

Chasing Coral : Coral reefs around the world are vanishing at an unprecedented rate. A team of divers, photographers and scientists set out on a thrilling ocean adventure to discover why and to reveal the underwater mystery to the world. Watch documentary to learn more. Click link in film title. I was honored to present with Mark Eakin, Chief Scientific Advisor

Sea Change Project: We tell stories that connect people to the wild, motivating them to become part of the regeneration of our planet. Through our work we have started a movement of emotional ecology, where people feel a meaningful connection to wild places and the animals that live in them. Our goal is to protect South Africa’s marine environment by making the Great African Seaforest a global icon. The sea has always been linked to our evolution and our changing consciousness. The origins of all life on earth began in the ocean. This means that our DNA evolved from sea-creatures and our great, great ancestors were some special species of fish. The latest archaeological evidence suggests that the modern human mind evolved at the sea and that the relationship we had with the ocean helped fuel our brains. Rock art depicting fish and sea-life, suggests that the ocean has always had great symbolic relevance and power in our collective unconscious.

My Octopus Teacher : Sea Change Project co-founder and naturalist, Craig Foster’s Must See film. Our love for the Great African Sea forest is built on our daily interactions with this extraordinary place. We are committed to sharing that love and experience with as many people as we can reach. We hope to play a part in bringing our ancient relationship with nature and the ocean back to life in our rapidly changing world.

Seaspiracy : Passionate about ocean life, filmmaker Ali Tabrizi documents the harm that humans do to marine species and uncovers alarming global corruption.

Kiss the Ground: Welcoming the ancient wisdom in Kristen Ohlson’s The Soil Will Save Us (above) and in this film broadcasting from Netflix. The solution is under our feet. Innovative nature documentary that will leave you feeling hopeful. Science experts unpack the ways the soil can help shift climate change and preserving the planet. Kiss the Ground Netflix

Pioneers: Publications

Wangari Mathaai: Unbowed: Visionary and Greenbelt Movement founder was inspiring model for Felix Finkbeiner in his story above. Her life and planet changing work continues to circle the globe today. Read her autobiography: Unbowed

Kristen Ohlson: The Soil Will Save Us: Ancient wisdom is our best guide and solution. Thousands of years of poor farming and ranching practices—and, especially, modern industrial agriculture—have led to the loss of up to 80 percent of carbon from the world’s soils. That carbon is now floating in the atmosphere, and even if we stopped using fossil fuels today, it would continue warming the planet. In The Soil Will Save Us, journalist and bestselling author Kristin Ohlson makes an elegantly argued, passionate case for "our great green hope"—a way in which we can not only heal the land but also turn atmospheric carbon into beneficial soil carbon—and potentially reverse global warming. See her in the film listed above: Kiss the Ground

Grid Philly : Stellar resource for local Philadelphia sustainability on so many levels, environmental magazine and more…
